We're excited to welcome GenZConservative to Dennis's Gulch. This is a young, bold individual who doesn't shy away from a debate - even on a college campus. This article is part of a series on free speech. To read more, go here, and be sure to check out the whole website - Gen Z Conservative.
First, I think an introduction would be appropriate. I am originally from Atlanta, GA, but I now go to school in Virginia. For my degree, I am currently working towards a double major in politics and accounting. I think that those two subject areas will help set me up for success in life, no matter what career path I pursue. In addition to classes and social activities, I am heavily involved in campus politics. Because I think it is every student’s responsibility to make their campus a better place, I have tried to do my best to lobby for conservative causes that matter to me and would be good for the campus. That political involvement has made me a well-known campus conservative.
I am known on my campus for being very conservative. People that meet me know that about me due to my involvement in clubs and campus journalism. Not that that’s a bad thing, it just makes my experience a bit different. It shouldn’t, we should all be able to get along with people outside our political sphere, but it does. That experience has been super valuable. I have learned how to get along with all types of people, disagree and debate in a respectful way even when the other side isn’t being civil, and how to stand up for myself in a strong manner. Hopefully I can educate others on how to do the same through this column and my personal website. Navigating a college campus as a conservative can be tough; there are lots of obstacles. But maybe this advice can make it a little less difficult for all of the other Gen Z conservatives!
Is Free Speech Disappearing on College Campuses?
In this first column, I would like to describe the problem of free speech on college campuses. Or, in better words, the problem that liberals seem to have with allowing free speech.
America has traditionally been known as a haven for free speech. Yes, you can’t scream “fire” in a crowded theater and cause a panic, but you can always stand up for what you believe in. Students, for better or worse, stood up against the government to protest the war in Vietnam. African-Americans marched for Civil Rights. Conservatives advocate for reduced taxes and less gun control. Our system has been strengthened by that free speech because it brings debates into the public sphere. Once a topic is debated by free people, it is hard to hide the truth. Americans have always believed in that and treasured their right to free speech.
Or at least that used to be the case. A recent phenomenon is that many liberal students, professors, and administrators refuse to accept the concept of free speech. When presented with an idea that they disagree with, they don’t debate it. Instead, they shut down all conversation. Students start crying and run off to their safe space. Professors scream that you’re wrong, shut down all conversation, and harass you for expressing beliefs different than theirs. Administrators refuse to allow conservative speakers to come visit.
For a conservative student, that atmosphere and environment can be extremely hard to navigate. We should be able to express our ideas openly and freely. But, we can’t. The radical leftists on campus freak out. So, instead of having thoughtful debates on pro-choice versus pro-life, or low taxes versus an increased welfare state, capitalism versus socialism or any other social or political issue, we are forced to just listen to the party line on a wide variety of subjects. There is little to no thoughtful debate of the important subjects currently bedeviling American society. Instead, there is just one line of thought expressed; the thoughts of the most radical edges of the Democratic party. On many college campuses, conservative students have no voice.
To me, that is incredibly sad and troubling. It is sad because it goes against everything that America once stood for. Like I described earlier, we used to be a country known for supporting freedom of speech. Now, we aren’t. Disagreement is termed hate speech and shut down completely. How saying that lowering taxes is a good policy idea is “spreading hate speech” is beyond me. But it all seems to make sense to the radical left. And that is why it is so troubling.
It would be one thing if these people didn’t really believe in what they’re advocating for. If they were just cynically using terms like “hate speech” to stifle their political opponents. That would be bad, but combatable. It wouldn’t be in line with past American thinking, but it makes sense in a realpolitik sort of way. And I’m sure some are using their “sensitivity” and calling opposing arguments “hate speech” to do just that. But, the problem is that most aren’t just being Machiavellian. Instead, they actually seem to believe their own propaganda. And that is impossible to combat. If they really do think the way they say they do, then all hope may be lost.
I don’t like being a pessimist, but I have trouble seeing how we can recover from a situation where tens of thousands of the intellectual elite seem to believe that the opposing views are both evil and not to be discussed. If the views of the other side are bad, you debate those views and use facts and logic to poke holes in the other side’s argument. That is the right way to handle disagreements. Yet, liberal students, professors, and administrators on college campuses can’t seem to do that. They are completely unable to handle the idea of the other side disagreeing with them, so they just shut down all debate. They aren’t emotionally mature enough to have debates, so they prevent those debates from happening in the first place. It is a very sad state of affairs.
So, what can a conservative college student do to push back on the current shut down of free speech? Two things. If you master these two ways to push back, we might be able to turn the tide.
The first is to always be prepared for a debate. Don’t seek those debates out but be ready to have them if the other side voices a political opinion that you disagree with. Know your facts, keep your emotions tucked away, and just debate logically. Ask questions about the other side’s point of view to both better understand it and poke holes in it. Bring up your opinions, and make sure to use indisputable and well-researched facts to support them. Know your sources, and make sure those sources are reliable. It is also preferable to have unbiased sources. Fox News and Breitbart won’t change minds. The Wall Street Journal or Politico might. And be willing to debate thoughtfully for however long it takes. Don’t be the first to give in, even if you know that you are right. They will count that as a victory. Instead, be the one that will debate till the end. They will give in first.
The second thing is that you need to always remain respectful and keep your emotions under control. The other side can do neither of those things, so they always look ridiculous. Be the bigger man. Instead of making fun of one of them for calling your ideas “hate speech,” instead explain thoughtfully why it is a mainstream and ethically acceptable opinion. Doing so may seem ridiculous. But it will help keep the debate going in a respectful manner so that you can change minds. Because always remember, the other side has authority figures in their corner. As soon as you start lashing out in the same manner that they do, the debate will be shut down and you might even be punished. It is a ridiculous double standard, but it exists. Maybe one day we can overturn it, but for now we just need to deal with it. Finally, keep your emotions in check. That relates to always being respectful, but is worth saying. You will be much more likely to change minds and effectively get your point across if you don’t get angry. What the other side will be defending might make your blood boil. As I talked about in my “The Democratic Party has Changed” post, the current Democratic party supports some pretty nasty policies like late-term abortion. I used to get so angry about those things. But, because I was angry, I couldn’t convince anyone that my point of view was the rational and right one. I looked just as emotional and irrational as the left. Now, I do my best to remain calm. That has been a much better strategy for convincing people. Stick to it, it works.
I hope you enjoyed this post! It should be helpful for those seeking to understand why and how liberals have shut down free speech and how we can fight back against it. The flag is planted! The battle lines are drawn! Your elected betters in Statesville, North Carolina have decided to throw down against one of StandAthwart.com’s more beloved advertisers, GANDER RV. Why? Because GANDER RV had the audacity to fly a freaking HUGE American flag over their business. The problem being, Statesville has an ordinance that contradicts North Carolina state law in limiting the size of a flag you can fly. This being the era of snowflakes and pansies, Statesville, NC probably thought all they would have to do is flex their authoritative muscle to get GANDER RV to conform to its demands. What they had not considered, is running headlong into one Marcus Lemonis.
Background: As a tiny infant, Mr. Lemonis was abandoned at an orphanage as war ravaged through Lebanon in 1973. Through an incredible quirk of fate he was adopted by a couple from Miami that brought him home to the U.S. In the Lemonis family, Marcus was taught love of country and taught himself the art of making money. Early in his career, he worked under guidance from Lee Iacoca and completely transformed the RV business. He is currently the CEO of Camping World, parent company for GANDER RV.
Then this happened…: Camping World and GANDER OUTDOORS for years have been deeply ingrained as primary sponsors of NASCAR. In 2017 there was a big brouhaha in Charlottesville, VA between far left and far right political factions. After the event blew up in violence, a microphone was shoved in President Trump’s face and the media immediately spun his comments negatively against him. Shortly after, a microphone was shoved in the face of Marcus Lemonis who reflexively made this statement, referring to the President: “There’s no doubt that there is probably not many consumers in this country today that are in favor of what has been said in the last couple days — and if they are, frankly, don’t shop at my business.” (facepalm!) …Dude! That is probably stupidest thing you could say to loyal NASCAR fans when you are spending millions of dollars trying to get them - to “shop at (your) business”.
The backlash was swift and severe. To Lemonis’s credit, so was his humble apology. The entire text of which can be found HERE. I strongly encourage you to read the brief letter. There is something all of us can learn about capitalism from his experience in this highly charged political theater.
Now, almost two years later, the media spotlight is again on Marcus Lemonis and GANDER RV regarding the flag flying kerfuffle. On May 16th, Statesville filed a lawsuit seeking an injunction against GANDER RV to force them to take down the flag and to impose a $50 per day fine. This fine would be calculated retroactively from Oct. 15, 2018. This now amounts to a penalty just north of $11,000. Swiftly, Lemonis countered on his Twitter page stating: “I will not budge... I will not compromise... I’m grateful for who I am and what I have and it’s clear to me the reasons why... #usa I will not take the flag down @cityofsvl or any other city.”
When the prospect of going to jail over the flag surfaced, Lemonis had this to say. “I would prefer not to (go to jail),” he further stated. “It's not a super-favorable outcome. But that's how big a line in the sand this is for me.”
I predict that after this all blows over, Statesville, NC will have amended its flag flying ordinance to the favor of GANDER RV and freedom. Marcus Lemonis should be lauded for standing up to an unrighteous law and seeing it tossed out. He should also be commended for using the controversy to show solidarity with his customer base. As an added bonus, he will be erasing the bad juju created by his earlier comments.
Marcus Lemonis got where he is today by living and practicing American capitalism. He knows this and proudly acknowledges that fact. By his willingness to battle for the ideals that his customers also live and hold dear, he has earned our respect here at StandAthwart.com. Be sure to check out GANDER RV and consider all that GANDER OUTDOORS offers for your next adventure!
If someone has a different take on any given subject, usually, I can respect that. Even when they are flat out and obviously wrong. Why? Because it’s their right. So, as long as they can return the favor and grant me my right to be wrong, we can live in peace and harmony.
Case not in point, DICK’S Sporting Goods. After the Parkland School shooting in Florida in February of 2018, DICK’S CEO Ed Stack issued a statement relating the company’s new found stand on gun control. If after such a tragic and unsettling occurrence, DICK’S decides that they no longer desire to sell firearms, so be it. They are free to choose what they feel is best for their company and its shareholders.
Undoubtedly, the result of a school shooting is an extremely emotional time. Certainly Mr. Stack was also rattled by the fact that the shooter had legally purchased a gun from DICK’S, though that particular gun was not used in the Parkland event. Had it been, the howls from the gun-control goons would have been insufferable and it all would have been directed at DICK’S. For this reason, I can partially cut them some slack.
However, here’s where they lost me, many others and $150,000,000 in revenue to date (from their statement – Bold highlights are mine):
“...At the same time, we implore our elected officials to enact common sense gun reform and pass the following regulations:
The biggest problem you have when they argue for gun control, is the assumption that when your controls are enacted, everything else remains status quo. Here’s a simple physics lesson for y’all: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. It is true in Newton’s laws of motion. It is true in the laws of political action. That’s what laws are intended to do; to change the motion (direction) of behavior. Therefore, it is certain that other motions will be affected as well.
If you ban or restrict certain elements of a right (2nd Amendment), you are going to cause an equal and opposite reaction to the purpose of that right. For example, if you take from someone a device that they can use to protect their home from a bad person who has a device of equal or greater force, you will be assuring that person and their children’s fatality. If even “one life is -----” lost, will it be worth it?
If you disarm a population, can you honestly expect all other factors that give freedom today will remain intact? What recourse does this population have when their “betters” force policies on them that are detrimental to life and liberty? Just vote them out of office? How’s that working out for 50% of the population today? Now consider the powers that be will still have guns!
If you are going to uproot a constitutional amendment under the basis that “…these steps can't guarantee tragedies like Parkland will never happen again…” we are headed towards a very unfriendly negotiation. No one in their right mind is going to give you patronage to fund this scheme!
Additionally, when someone begins to harangue you about not needing an AR15 for hunting, know that you are dealing with an intellectual inferior. Treat them as such. The 2A was not written for hunting. It was written as protection from an all-powerful government. It is our last chance for resistance from tyranny. When storied capitalists like Dick Stack’s progeny cast aside the business sense that had gotten them where they are today… it is just one step closer to losing all our freedoms. The 2nd Amendment to me and to all Americans (whether they know it or not) is one of the most brilliant pieces of governance in the history of the world.

Now that the political landscape has shifted more violently than San Francisco circa 1906, let's take just a moment to quickly surmise where the top players currently stand and what the 2020 future may hold in store.
Trump: After this week’s slapping down of the entire left wing like a Sunday morning boner, he is now in control of the field. It is hard (no pun intended) to see today what could dethrone him from this current position. 588 days, however, is more than an eternity in politics. Anything can shift or come up between now and the election. The buzz of these last few days will be long worn off.
Biden: Having yet to even officially announce, he's considered the one best suited to unseat the President. Previously a senator from a small state (Delaware), he is a 2 time also-ran loser. He is only still in the spot light because Obama chose him as his VP. It is widely accepted that he was chosen for that position so that Obama would not have anyone to overshadow him. The Creepy Uncle Joe moniker exists for a reason. The ubiquitous videos of him making lewd comments and gestures toward women and small girls should sink him quickly. He will fast become nothing but a footnote in this election cycle. No one is jonesing for a President Joe Biden.
Sanders: Should the Democrat field remain as it is today, Bernie is favored by many to emerge as their candidate. He will struggle to get there simply because he’s an old white guy. But the left is really not that concerned about identity politics. That is - only if it suits their purposes. The crazy left now controls the party. His socio/communist ideals will override any hesitations they have about his age and race. Should he get the nod, Trump will destroy him. It will be the biggest landslide since ‘84.
Warren/Harris/Booker/Beto/Gillibrand etal: I seriously doubt anyone else in this puppy pile of lunatics will be able to rise above the din. For them, it already is a race to see who can jump the furthest off the cliff. Gratuitously trying to out flank Bernie’s left will only make them more unappealable, even to their own ilk.
Dark horses: Pete Buttigieg is the mayor of South Bend and is a young (37) Afghanistan war vet. As an outsider, he does not have the stink of making a left wing fool of himself that the others have. He is quickly gaining the attention in his party, rising in the Iowa polls. Were he to team up with Tulsi Gabbard, another young 37 year old veteran, they could make for an interesting remake as the new face of the Democrat party.
Who else?: Howard Schulz is a self-described “lifelong Democrat” that has decided to run as independent. He claims that the party has drifted too far left. (Duh!) Does he truly believe this – or did he have inside information about the Mueller report…? Doesn’t matter. Right now, it looks like a very shrewd move. Succeeding outside of any party structure is difficult if not impossible. This election though, will be like nothing we’ve ever experienced. Historical norms will not be a given to repeat. Should Bernie falter or one of the dark horses fail to show, Schultz’s bona fides as a left winger will still be very much intact for him to return as salvation for the ticket.
It should also not be discounted that he is a self-made billionaire - a capitalist of epic proportions. This will greatly work to his favor in blunting some of Trump’s appeal. He’s made some goofy moves and statements over the years – but so has Trump. With the Democrat’s recent floundering, I predict them to self-immolate and welcome Howard Schultz back to carry their torch and be the 2020 Democrat nominee.
Two old rich white guys. The SJWs will be inconsolable.
The much ballyhooed and eagerly awaited Mueller report on the supposed “collusion with Russia” was released over the weekend. The activist media and their political goon squad on the left came up snake eyes. Every American should feel relieved that their President was not engaged in the activity that they were accusing him of. Every American should also be righteously enraged that we were drug through this mess for two whole years. It is patently obvious to anyone with an inkling of contact with reality, that this was (and only was) a political hit job from the get-go.
It was a deliberate attempt to overthrow the duly elected leader of the free world because the losers of the election, A: Are finding it difficult to relinquish their hold on power. B: Are attempting to cover up their own crimes and misdeeds while they were at the controls of government and during the election. These freaks must be stopped, smoked out and punished!
This is not the time to say– as Gerald Ford said after the pardon of Nixon – "Our long national nightmare is over." It is only over in the sense that the innocents have been exonerated. It will not be over until the full consequences toward the traitorous actors has been meted out. Justice is screaming for attention!
It is aggravating and frustrating for most of us as typical Americans to only be able to sit by and watch the events unfold. We know that essentially, we are powerless to do a lot about the larger goings on of our country. Yes, we can vote – and it has power – but only so much… and it’s not much. We feel helpless as those in control of our main institutions treat us like garbage. The media. Big Tech. Education. Entertainment. Commerce… All of them are aligned to work against us and what we know makes America the “last great hope for mankind” (H/T Ronald Reagan)
So, what are we to do? We fight! Fight like hell and fight like your life depends upon it – because it does! The left is fighting for keeps and you are their enemy. Believe me, they are fighting to destroy you.
The historical mainstream media has long ago been corrupted. Seek out alternative sources for your information. As you do, understand this: There is no such thing as unbiased news anymore. Everyone has an agenda and as humans, they are incapable of relating news without bias – on either side. All we can do is load up on the info and make our own determination on truth.
The leftist stranglehold on us with Big Tech is unmistakable. Twitter and Facebook have blatantly suppressed or outright deleted content that they disagree with. They and other activist companies control the algorithms that determine the content you interact with. We must be relentless in pursuit of the truth. This is a leviathan that has more control of our lives than it, anyone, or anything ever should.
The public school system is a wreck. It is ruined. My biggest regret in life was sending my kids through it, not realizing how lost it was until after the damage had been done. If you can’t afford private school, then consider home schooling. There are many effective and high-quality options. Seek them out.
Does the agenda of Hollywood even need to be pointed out? Far too long have average Americans put up with consuming their hatred. Stop giving money to these scoundrels by buying their products! There are alternatives for entertainment. Find and enjoy them!
The best chance for the survival of our republic is the exercise of capitalism. Make no mistake – the left knows this. That is why you are seeing the increased push for socialism and socialist personalities in our government. Actively engage with companies that are not pursuing an activist’s agenda. It may not be so easy to one-stop click and shop for your needs, but do you know where those proceeds are going? Are you bankrolling your own demise?
All of this is requires effort. Our grandfathers, fathers, sons and daughters fought with their lives on the line – many giving it all in the fight for freedom. Our task has of yet, not required this type of sacrifice. So far, all we are being asked of is diligence and a concerted effort to defeat this tyranny. Our job is exponentially easier because of the sacrifices of the warriors that came before us. Honor them. Fight!
Then apply it in its purest form:
~Better job prospects
~More personal freedom
Any person running to be our President that will not differentiate between two incompatible societies deserves neither our vote nor our respect. Don’t think for a second that this man, when in power, will grant you the same freedom that he enjoyed while achieving success AS A CAPITALIST in our capitalist system. It is all in with socialism for these miscreants. That is where the power is. They do not have power over you if you have power in your own destiny.
He knows what it takes to achieve success in life. He's lived it. Why would he then want to change those circumstances for everyone else?
Answer: He has his. The only way remaining for him to gain (exponentially) more power is for you to crawl to his "benevolent" form of governance to get yours.
At least our thoughts are still subject to market forces. I think I aint buying what you're selling, dood!
Below is a word that has recently been grossly abused and misunderstood in our current culture. Let’s refer to Merriam-Webster who for more than 150 years has been America's leading and most-trusted provider of language information. We will rely on them for all of our definitions going forward with attributions provided:
fas·cism | \ ˈfa-ˌshi-zəm also ˈfa-ˌsi- \
Definition of fascism
1 often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
2 : a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control
Fascism reached its zenith during WWII with the likes of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. Their respective regimes were righteously crushed. Sadly, the ideology did not perish with their reigns. From Castro’s Cuba to Mugabe’s Zimbabwe and back to the Chavez/Maduro fiasco in Venezuela and many places in between, fascism is flourishing like an antibiotic resistant venereal disease.
Now, let’s make a true comparison here with the definitions of two other competing philosophies:
Definition of capitalism: an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market
Definition of socialism: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.
Given these descriptions, which do you think is closer to the definition of fascism? Is it capitalism or socialism? Easy math, right? Then consider it your duty as a capitalist and an American to repel any effort to label you and your like-minded countrymen as such. Equally, you should be as diligent in identifying the real socio-fascistic yobs and calling them out at every angle.
It is relatively easy to locate blatant socio-fascist threats. Gaudy politicians along with their catchy but go-nowhere programs are as simple to identify as moochers they attract - but what about those fascist pigs that smear on the lipstick of capitalism?
Consider the story of Iraq war veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Joe Biggs in his dealings with Chase Bank:
More of Chase Bank and their fascist tactics with Americans can be found HERE. It’s worth your time. I believe that following Mr. Biggs’ campaign, #DumpChase is very much in order.
Corporate Fascism in its current form is a relatively new phenomenon. However, it has been in the news for several months now since Visa and MasterCard allegedly upended the account for donations to The David Horowitz Freedom Center. This was done following an offensive by the Southern Poverty Law Center to label the Freedom Center as a hate group.
So let’s get this straight, a credit card processing company bows to pressure from a rabid left wing activist group who uses their corpo-fascist power in the capitalist marketplace to deny services to Americans simply exercising their God-given right to free speech. Let that sink in for a bit…
Now tell me how this ends amicably? Fortunately, for now, in this case it has. It is reported that Horowitz’s services have been restored. However, many other Americans’ have not. Regardless, the line has been crossed – the battle has begun.
We will not submit.
You may remember back in January, noted singer and geezer celebrity Bono made this statement about capitalism: “Capitalism has taken more people out of poverty than any other ‘ism,'” The squeals of delight from pundits and opinion shapers on the right hurt your ears. They could not wait to get the word out that Bono had agreed with them. Why? Because… Yay Celebrities!!!
More on celebrities in a future post. Stay tuned. In the meantime, here’s your free life’s lesson for the day: Never, ever take advice from a celebrity. Bono’s words in this example are exhibit #1. In a follow up interview with CNBC the crooner further elaborated: “Though it has taken more people out of extreme poverty that any other ‘ism,’ it’s caused a lot of damage, a lot of harm,” ... “We need to re-imagine it, repurpose it, remake it, in our own image and the image of this new generation coming through that really, really want their world back.”
Interestingly, he never details exactly the “damage” and “harm” he claims is caused by capitalism. That’s a shame. It would have been a joy to enlighten him with reason. However, it is the second part of this quote that really strains my pain. “We need to re-imagine it, repurpose it, remake it, in our own image and the image of this new generation coming through that really, really want their world back.”
So… here we have a system that has taken more people out of poverty than any other. Without giving evidence of its detriments, Mr. Bono now expects us to hand over this system to the unelected and unaccountable goons at the UN, the International Monetary Fund and his own hand-picked cabal of activists. All this so they can reimagine, repurpose and remake capitalism in their image and their version of what is fair and equitable. Pfft! Pound sand!
What world was it, Mr. Bono, that this “new generation” once had that now that they “really, really want back”? I’m not as old as you Bono, but in my recollection of very recent history, it is this new generation of grifters and free loaders that are trying to steer our world away from the system that – by YOUR words – has taken more people out of poverty than any other.
I want MY world back!
Pull quote: "Is it really true that political self interest is nobler somehow than economic self interest?"
By show of hands, how many of you have participated in a boycott?... No, wait. That doesn’t work in this format… (ahem!)... Let’s instead begin with one of the applicable definitions for the word “boycott” from the Oxford Living Dictionaries ;
1.1 Refuse to buy or handle (goods) as a punishment or protest.
‘an advert urges consumers to boycott the firm's coffee’
Typically, when we think of boycotting something, the vision comes to mind of a bunch of belligerents pooling their influence to join with other cranks and staging some kind of picket or protest. You can picture them chanting some clichéd slogan marching back and forth in front of a business.
Obviously, this enterprise must have performed some type of an egregious sin to motivate such a gathering to assemble – and by gosh, by golly, the mob will not rest until the offenders are run out of business or until the extremist’s brand of justice has been served! (gaargh!)
Who has time for this nonsense?! Do you? - Probably not, as you are like most respectable folk; earning a living, raising a family, etc. Which of the activities of your life would you be willing to sacrifice to participate in a boycott? If you’re anything like me, you’re also just too darn lazy to conjure up the emotional fortitude for such an event.
I hate to break it to you, but we are all a bunch of boycotters. Allow me to demonstrate by taking it to the logical extreme: Let’s say you purchase a particular brand of butter that does not meet your high standards of taste and quality. You decide then and there that you will not ever buy this brand again. Is that decision not made as a “protest” to your first experience with the product?
Some will accuse StandAthwart.com as being a “protest” or a “boycott” site. They would be accurate based upon my description in the paragraph above. However, we at StandAthwart.com are not of the mindset to ask anyone to boycott a product or company in the more “belligerent” sense of the word. As a blogger, I will inform you from time to time of stupid decisions made by capitalists (whether they embrace the title, or not) that go against the traditions and values that have helped America lead the world to a better place.
The capitalist activists may freely make these illogical business decisions at their very own discretion. We do not have the right or the power to force them to do otherwise. However, should you decide not to patronize this goofball activism, that is your right and your choice.
There are plenty of other places for us to spend our hard earned cash. Get yourself to THE LIST. Here you will find what you’re looking for. I cannot promise that the people who run these businesses will agree with you politically, religiously or otherwise. They may not – and that’s okay. Really, it is.
Just let it be known that we will not continue to be abused as an ATM for anyone’s hectoring advocacy! (gaargh!)
Face it gentlemen, like your father before you, you’ve taken them out and shown them a good time. Now they’ve taken your money and they are NOT going to call you in the morning. Why would they? They got what they wanted from you and are now moving on to their ultimate desire.
The always captivating and adroit Michelle Malkin gives the perfect rundown of the Gillette story and what it means as capitalist activism. Read it HERE. It will make you more intelligent.
Two days ago when this Gillette story broke, my first reaction was; “ah ha! Here is the perfect example of how and why StandAthwart.com is needed.” This is the low hanging fruit. The blog post will almost write itself. It’s too easy!
But...yeah, not really. Sure, Gillette is stupid to condescend to their customers. Blah, blah, blah… But why are they doing it? To answer that question, in my view, will require some rather dark assumptions.
The main purpose of capitalism is to create…well, capital. Assets. Money. And as we all know; money is power. Even in the smallest definitions of the phrase. Power to simply buy a new pair of pants. Power to move to a new city. Power to acquire a new business to create even more power - and so on until you’ve run out of objects to purchase. But what to do then with all of this accumulated power?
Enter capitalist activism. Ask yourself; would you forego purchasing a new pair of pants if you could instead, spend that capital to change a particular curriculum found in your child’s school? Of course you would. The powers that be of Gillette are doing the same thing. If this decision cost them a few hundred million in revenue, so what? They are a multi buh-buh-buh-Billion dollar company. This decision is not about creating more power. It is the exercise of their existing power. They are spending their capital (thanks to your patronage) to affect societal change based on their priorities, not yours.
Deal with it.
Often times when writing, I need to be certain of the meaning of a particular word. Technology is my friend so a typical web search will always direct me to a menu of online dictionaries to choose from. Today’s inquiry was no different and it led me to select dictionary.com for my purposes. Bingo! As simple as that, there was the confirmation that I needed to proceed with my intent.
But, wait. What is this sub headline here below the information I was seeking? Rashida Tlaib Backlash Raises the Question: Why Can't Women Swear? Huh?! Pretty sure “Why Can’t Women Swear?” was not in any part of my word search. How is this related to a website that promotes itself as an answer for the meaning of words? And no, it is not a random advertisement.
If you are unfamiliar yet with Congresswoman Tlaib’s vulgar screed, you can find the story looking on any news site within the past week. I will not give her any more publicity here other than to demonstrate the not-so subtle activism of some capitalist endeavors.
Obviously, someone at dictionary.com felt the need to express solidarity with Ms. Tlaib in her bawdy attack on the President - but why there and why in that format and on their front page? It flummoxes me why anyone would take this approach in the conducting of any business.
Imagine walking into your neighborhood Wal-Mart and being met by a blue vested septuagenarian. Instead of them giving you a friendly greeting and helping you select a shopping cart, they accost you with the question; “Why can’t a woman call our President a motherf*%$#@!?”
If this ever does happen to you, hopefully, you are astute enough to have your phone on to record this interaction. Because, as you become an overnight YouTube sensation, the local constable will, no doubt, be scooping up the occupant of the blue vest and taking them directly to a facility for the criminally insane – or at the very least – in for a complete evaluation.
Yet here is dictionary.com doing the same damn thing!
(Look at me everybody! I can swear too - It’s easy!)
It is one of the many great success stories of American capitalism. Two brothers with a dream convinced investors to join forces with them and the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) opened their doors. The year was 1958 and the company has never looked back. In 2007 IHOP purchased Applebee’s to become the “largest full-service restaurant company in the world.” Someone, or many someones throughout this organization, really knows what it means to be a capitalist.
All of which only serve to deepen this mystery: Why would IHOP cancel their advertising on one of America’s most successful media outlets, Tucker Carlson's Fox News show? Here they most assuredly found a loyal following of customers that have helped them achieve their cemented status in the restaurant industry. According to the activists that intimidated IHOP (and others) into boycotting Tucker Carlson’s program, this was the problem; during a segment on his program while speaking of the problems inherent with illegal immigration, Carlson said, "Our country's economy is becoming more automated and tech-centered by the day. It's obvious that we need more scientists and skilled engineers but that's not what we're getting. Instead, we're getting waves of people with high school educations or less. Nice people, no one doubts that, but as an economic matter, this is insane. It's indefensible, so nobody even tries to defend it. Instead, our leaders demand that you shut up and accept this. We have a moral obligation to admit the world's poor, they tell us, even if it makes our own country poorer and dirtier and more divided"
Undoubtedly the goofball activists were triggered by the phrase “poorer and dirtier”. However, Mr. Carlson gave a thorough and detailed explanation of his remarks in a follow up on his program. He is convincing. (See and read his response here.)
In a rational world, there never would have been a controversy at all. In a semi-rational world, if there was a controversy, the offenders follow up would end any such embroilment. Sadly, our world is becoming more irrational by the day. IHOP and the like only fuel this twaddle by succumbing to the crazed activist crowd despite alienating a core customer base.
No one is saying that a capitalist enterprise should be unable to pick and choose where they spend their advertising dollars, nor should any capitalists be required to only spend those funds with organizations that absolutely fall in line with their values. For example: If there was an organization that condones significant human rights issues like, oh, I don’t know…let’s say; unlawful killings, executions without due process, torture, interference with privacy, restrictions on freedom of expression, trafficking in persons, violence and discrimination against women and the criminalization of sexual activity. To any thinking and responsible human that would be an organization you would NOT, under any circumstances, ever want to do business with. Hypocritically, IHOP chooses to do just that by operating stores in countries that promote those exact types of comportment. According to the U.S. State Department, Saudi Arabia, The UAE and Kuwait are all complicit in engaging in these activities. Yet IHOP trumpets the acclaim that Tucker Carlson should be blackballed because a bunch of screeching mandrakes purposefully misinterpret his point of view.
For left wing activists, hypocrisy has become a staple of their existence. Example: When the pussy hatters show up en masse with mimeo genitalia snug on their noggins to protest a comment from one President (Trump) whilst ignoring the confirmed activity of another President (Clinton), it’s hard to take them seriously. It has now recently been discovered that the organizer of this same pink toque’d cabal has expressed solidarity with the Muslim Brotherhood and their support of female genital mutilation. The practice of female genital mutilation involves the removal of the clitoris and part of the labia minor. Putting that in complete metaphorical form, it would mean that the entire knitted fuchsia headdress that their movement is built upon, would be eliminated! How can she possibly square that hypocrisy with her conscience?
Let’s face it; despite the resounding success of IHOP and the capitalist achievements that they’ve accomplished, they still would probably be one of the last choices I would call upon to provide my breakfast. Let’s just say that I have a higher standard on the routines used to start my day. Why then in the name of Rooty Tooty Fresh 'N Fruity® should we trust them to give advice on how to secure our borders?
Years ago while walking back to my car with a typical assortment of goods obtained through a capitalistic transaction with my local grocer, I came across the back end of a Subaru Forester festooned with bumper stickers. You’ve seen this all too predictable car before. There are several in Everytown, USA. This person was an activist. Like all the others, they were gratuitously exercising their God given 1st amendment rights by being loud and obnoxious. One sticker that stood out condescendingly stated “Exactly what are Conservatives trying to conserve?” “Freedom!” I said out loud to the awareness of no one. I also thought to myself, how more obvious could that possibly be? Struggling with the urge to carve my clever answer into the rear fender of this hipster carry-all using the business end of my house key, I realized that by doing so I would be, by my actions, joining the crazed activist crowd and their antics. Indeed, it would be worse. Expressing opinions is not a crime – no matter how rude or condescending. Vandalism certainly is – no matter how deserving of the act I thought it to be. I just resigned to be content with the knowledge that living in the Land of the Free meant that we have to tolerate the boorish along with the respectable. This is actually, a very good thing.
However, today’s activism has been taken to an unprecedented, fevered pitch of irrationality. We see it in the streets and in our news feeds. Worse yet, in the products we buy and consume. For example: You notice upon sitting down to enjoy your morning coffee, a news story about a coffee chain that has pledged to hire 10,000 “refugees” as a direct affront to a policy enacted by the duly elected President of the United States. “What the heck does that have to do with my quad-Americano?!?” you mumble, painfully aware that the logo on your coffee cup matches the logo of the offending coffee company. You cringe. It matters not that a more qualified American citizen may need a job dispensing this (inferior) product. NO! What matters is that the activist CEO can feel better about himself by sticking it to a politician that HE disagrees with. Here’s the rub: He is using the proceeds harvested out of YOUR wallet when you coughed up for his burnt coffee beans! You are the one paying for this madness!
Does coffee seem like a trivial matter? Then consider that between 2009 and 2013, Microsoft’s Bill Gates was responsible for funding Planned Parenthood “to the tune of $71 million”. Like me, you’ve used Mr. Gates’ products. Yeah… we helped pay for the unborn to be sucked out of their life and their body parts sold to the highest bidder. (Seriously, check out the links.)
On a more local level, during the height of the gay marriage hullabaloo, I visited a resident craft supplier for some various artsy and sundry items. As I approached the front door, I notice a professionally made flyer featuring the absconded colors of the rainbow hanging in the window stating: “Hate is not welcome here!” Hmm… Now this presents a dilemma for me. Do I go in and by default proclaim my solidarity with the declared activism? Or, do I walk away, thereby confirming to the world that I am indeed a hater? Here’s the problem, I don’t hate anyone… In fact, I resent the hell out of the insinuation that I “hate” just because I have a differing view than this person who wants a capitalistic exchange. “Screw them!” I bought my goods from an online seller that didn’t personally pigeon hole me.
You see, in the good ol’ days, a business owner or CEO would not dream of activising their product or company for the very rational fear that it would alienate a sizable chunk of their customer base. However, our economy as grown and expanded to the point that the zealots can use their wealth and perceived status to foist onto us their unwelcome and undesirable views of the world, regardless of what we think and even to spite us. For the most part, we’ve been content to ride along. Why? Because we just want our stuff.
Here’s the good news: There are tens of thousands if not millions of businesses that are not into activism. They just want to sell you their stuff. Stand Athwart the activising extremist and yell, STOP! (HT William F. Buckley Jr.) At StandAthwart.com we connect good people to good companies. Individuals who just want to sell stuff, to individuals who just want to buy stuff knowing that their precious dollars will not be going to support goofball activism; the direct action that undermines everything we know that makes this country freaking awesome!
